Powerlifting Fundamentals for Athletic Performance Webinar

This webinar will discuss the fundamentals of powerlifting participation and the benefits of participation across the lifespan.

Powerlifting Fundamentals for Athletic Performance Webinar

This webinar develops practitioner understanding and knowledge of the similarities and differences between non-disabled and para powerlifting competition, the uptake of powerlifting participation in Australia and applications for coaches and athletes to improve athletic performance.

Participants in this webinar will develop an understanding of the fundamentals of powerlifting participation and the benefits of participation across the lifespan. For those working with athletes, this webinar will provide insight into athlete preparation and modifiable factors that influence competitive success.

For general applications, this webinar will provide contemporary measures of strength for comparison and assessment in practice and will highlight new tools available to assess these outcomes.

Presented by Dr Dan van den Hoek & Dr Christopher Latella

Dr Dan van den Hoek, PhD, M Clin Ex Phys, B Ex Sp Sci, AEP, AES, ESSAM
Dr Dan van den Hoek (AES, AEP) is a Senior Lecturer in Clinical Exercise Physiology at the University of the Sunshine Coast. As an educator, Dan has taught at undergraduate and postgraduate programs at Deakin and Australian Catholic Universities. His teaching has been centred in clinical education/work-integrated learning, human anatomy, musculoskeletal rehabilitation, and occupational health and safety.

Dan’s research interests are varied. His work in sports science focuses on sports performance analysis and athlete preparation. In particular, Dan has developed a track record for performance analysis and strength adaptation in powerlifting and para-powerlifting. These investigations provide insight into how competition day factors can be modified to increase the odds of competitive success (winning). In the applied setting, Dan has used his skills as an AES/AEP in numerous roles with sports and organisations including Cricket Victoria, Red Bull Ampol Racing Team (V8 Supercars), baseball, and triathlon.

Dan is a member of Exercise and Sports Science Australia and is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) and Exercise Scientist (AES).

Dr Christopher Latella, PhD, B Hum Mov/Ex Sci (Hons), ASCA, NCSA CSCS, Australian Powerlifting Union accredited coach.
Dr Christopher Latella (PhD) is the course coordinator of the Master of Exercise Science (Strength and Conditioning) program and the head of the Neurophysiology Research Laboratory at Edith Cowan University.

Dr Latella’s research focusses on understanding strength and motor system function across the lifespan. Indeed, this encompasses detailed studies of neurophysiological behaviour in health and clinical settings, through to understanding strength as it relates to performance – particularly in the sport of powerlifting. Dr Latella oversees several externally funded research projects, and currently supervises six postgraduate research students and several research fellows in related projects.

Dr Latella remains an accredited powerlifting coach, and is accredited with both the Australian Strength and Conditioning Association, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
