Cardiac Rehabilitation for AEPs - Bundle

This bundle contains all three parts of ESSA's Cardiac Rehabilitation for AEPs. The workshop will help to equip AEPs who haven't had a lot of exposure to cardiac rehabilitation with contemporary knowledge informed by research and clinical competencies that they can begin to apply to their own practice immediately.

Cardiac Rehabilitation for AEPs with the emphasis on exercise for Phase II & III CR - Parts 1, 2, and 3

This bundle contains all three parts of ESSA's Cardiac Rehabilitation for AEPs.

This three-part workshop is designed to provide AEPs with a snapshot on the main components of cardiac rehabilitation (CR), based on recent authoritative guidelines, which in turn are informed by high quality research, and illustrated by many of Steve’s deidentified case studies across a very broad range of target pathologies for CR. Included will be primary and secondary aims of CR, challenges and opportunities for accessing CR, modes of delivery of CR, detailed coverage of the main pathologies where patients can benefit from CR, the importance of individualising both assessments and programming, pre-screening, simple and inexpensive technologies for CR, and many other elements.

Whilst the main PowerPoint presentation is very detailed (rich in content), much of this will be just for reference for participants following the workshop. Steve will try to focus on the key elements that are needed in delivering high quality, evidence-based CR programs.

The main pathologies (and guidance as to how to manage both risks and benefits of exercise) include ischaemic heart disease (IHD), chronic heart failure (CHF), hypertension, valve disease, cardiac arrhythmias and life-threatening conduction defects, cardiomyopathies, and peripheral arterial disease. CR following cardiological interventions such as valve replacements / repairs (e.g., AVR TAVI), percutaneous cardiac interventions (PCI; e.g., stents), and implantable devices including pacemakers (PPM) and implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD).

Steve has made almost 100 YouTube videos on topics related to CR and a table of contents including the YouTube links will be provided to delegates.

Throughout the workshop, Steve will focus on empowering delegates to begin to “connect the dots” between what often looks like an overwhelmingly complex range of medical services for a given condition, and the AEP’s exercise services. He will try to break down the complexities into bite sized bits that an AEP can use. He will try to connect the following for each major presentation of cardiovascular conditions: (i) pathology; (ii) pathophysiology; (iii) signs and symptoms; (iii) diagnostic techniques that importantly include some techniques that an AEP can easily perform with some education; (iv) main medical treatments and interventions, with the foci on first line medications; (iv) implantable devices such as permanent pacemakers (PPM) and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD); (v) AEPs to assess an individual’s risk of exercise participation across a range of exercise modes, intensities and volumes; and to empower AEPs to be able to provide safe and effective services for clients based on sound monitoring, sign and symptom vigilance and clinical reasoning.

Part 1 will cover simple technologies that AEPs can access in cardiac rehabilitation, aims, opportunities and challenges with access to cardiac rehabilitation and individualising cardiac rehabilitation programs.
Part 2 will cover simple target pathologies and clinical presentations for cardiac rehabilitation services. 
Part 3 will help to equip AEPs who haven't had a lot of exposure to cardiac rehabilitation with contemporary knowledge informed by research and clinical competencies that they can begin to apply to their own practice immediately. It will build on information already provided in parts one and two.

Presented by Professor Steve Selig, PhD, AES, AEP, ESSAF

Steve Selig is the retired Chair in Clinical Exercise Science at Deakin University and was an academic in cardiovascular exercise physiology for 34 years. In retirement, Steve continues to teach, research and practise cardiac exercise physiology. He enjoys mentoring students and new AEPs in his field of expertise.

Steve has been a long-term servant of ESSA in many capacities including Director on the Board (2005-2021), twice led peak advisory groups (2006-2008; 2013-2015) on behalf of ESSA that were tasked with restructuring the ESSA Professional Standards for Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEP), and many committee roles. The professional standards covered by the work of Steve and his colleagues span the period 2008-2021.

His research has focused on the benefits of exercise for people living with heart failure, and Steve is considered a leading exercise physiologist in Australia for the design of individualised exercise interventions for people living with treatment-resistant hypertension and labile hypotension, arrhythmias and conduction defects, complex valve disease and adult congenital heart disease.

Steve’s academic leadership has been recognised by many Awards, including a Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Teaching Excellence, and a National Citation for an Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning. In 2010, he was honoured to receive the ESSA President’s Award for services to clinical exercise physiology. In 2016, he was named as one of the “top 25 influencers of exercise and sports science in Australia” as part of the 25-year celebration of ESSA. In 2021, Steve was honoured with Life Membership of ESSA in recognition of a quarter of a century of exemplary and sustained contributions to the exercise and sport science professions.
