Building Resilience in Kids After Pain and Injury
Minor injuries such as bumps, scratches, and grazes are a part of everyday life for young children (2-7 years). In response to minor injuries, some children may scream and carry-on, others may get up and brush themselves off, and many may be somewhere in between. Even within the same child, different circumstances may evoke different reactions and responses to 'everyday' bumps and grazes. These 'everyday' pain experiences are important learning opportunities for young children and play a powerful role in shaping children's fundamental understanding of how pain, injury, and recovery works.

Sarah talks about some of the different ways that children learn about pain and injury, and in particular, the role of parents and caregivers. She will present some super-interesting research around the role of children's memories on subsequent pain experiences and will then provide some strategies for those who works with or interacts with young children to promote resilience after injury.
Presented by Dr Sarah Wallwork, BPhysio(Hons), PhD
Dr Sarah Wallwork is a Research Fellow in the Body in Mind research group at the University of South Australia. She completed her PhD in 2017 under the supervision of Professor Lorimer Moseley (University of South Australia) and Professor Giandomenico Iannetti (University College London, UK). After completing her PhD, she took up a Post-doctoral Research position at the University of Canberra’s Research Institute for Sport and Exercise in Canberra, Australia.
Sarah has a broad research interest in pain neurophysiology, cortical representation training, motor imagery, somatosensation, low back pain, and more recently – pain in paediatric populations. Her current research focus, for which she will be presenting on, is investigating how children might learn about pain, and what we can do to try and promote adaptive pain beliefs and behaviours in young children.
Sarah has two young children aged 3 and 6, and with a background as a physiotherapist, enjoys watching them absorb, learn, move, and develop from their experiences and from the world in which they interact!
