The inaugural Medico-Legal Conference is an event designed for Allied Health Professionals working with Workcover patients. The event will address a specific case study and highlight the multidisciplinary approach to get the best outcomes for the patient. During this event you will hear from an Accredited Exercise Physiologists, an Orthopaedic Surgeon, a Lawyer and other Allied Health Professionals as they work through the stages of a lower limb injury.

Presented by

Sarah Atkinson, Maurice Blackburn Lawyers
Sarah has over 25 years of experience representing injured people in compensation claims both in the UK and in Queensland and has the expertise to deal with the most complex and serious of cases. She has particular expertise in brain injuries and catastrophic injuries and has negotiated many multi-million dollar settlements, including several over $10 million.

Sarah provides comprehensive and compassionate advice and is an excellent negotiator. She prides herself on achieving outstanding results for clients, particularly in difficult and complex cases.

Sarah is part of Maurice Blackburn’s complex litigation team – a specialised team of legal experts who have decades of experience supporting seriously injured clients and their families.

Sarah also enjoys using her experience to assist other lawyers and to advocate for changes in the law when it is needed. She is a particular advocate for the rights of women and was awarded an Outstanding Achievement Award by the Queensland Law Society in 2015 for her contributions to the legal profession and the community, particularly in relation to women’s rights.

Katie Grice, OT, MLEA 
Katie is an accomplished occupational therapist with a career spanning over a decade, which has been dedicated to enabling independence and enhancing quality of life through evidence-based practice. She graduated with a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy from James Cook University and has since developed extensive experience supporting clients with a wide range of conditions, including degenerative neurological conditions, cancers, orthopaedic conditions, and other complex health challenges. Her comprehensive and collaborative approach to designing assistive technology and home modifications empowers individuals to achieve their personal goals, while meeting their functional requirements. 

Katie's dedication to accessibility extends beyond her role as an occupational therapist. She has also acquired a Diploma in Access Consulting, allowing her to work with commercial stakeholders to ensure buildings, spaces, and environments are accessible to people of all abilities, ensuring compliance with accessibility standards and legislation.

In her current role as the Medicolegal Services Manager at MLEA, Katie leverages her clinical expertise to guide and support clients through the complexities of the medicolegal process. 

Within the medicolegal field, Katie is highly skilled in the assessment and evaluation of individuals with injuries, disabilities, or impairments resulting from motor vehicle or occupational accidents, medical negligence, and other legal matters. Her goal is to ensure clients receive fair and equitable outcomes, reflecting her commitment to both their legal rights and well-being.

As a leader at MLEA, Katie is responsible for overseeing medicolegal services, driving initiatives to enhance the firm’s capabilities in managing complex cases, and contributing to the continuous improvement of service delivery. 

Alice Hyslop, AEP, Healthia 
Completing a double degree in physiotherapy and exercise science, Alice is a dual accredited physiotherapist and Exercise Physiologist (ESSAM) with over 10 years experience in a busy private practice clinic. This multi-disciplinary environment has provided her with significant experience in all musculoskeletal conditions across the life span including sporting teams and chronic disease. She has extensive experience in rehabilitation of injuries within injury compensation schemes within a multidisciplinary setting. Alice has a specific interest in musculoskeletal conditions and clinical exercise prescription in the aging adult. She has developed multiple exercise programs aimed at providing accessible, affordable and effective exercise interventions for musculoskeletal conditions and chronic disease. 

Alice has a passion for continuing professional development. As the Exercise Physiology Education discipline lead for Healthia  and a member of Healthia’s Professional Development Committee she has a specific interest in developing graduate Exercise Physiologists as well as supporting the clinical needs of all Exercise Physiologists within the Healthia company. In her time in this role she has developed the Exercise Physiology stream within the Healthia Recent Graduate program and contributed to the development to the Exercise Physiology stream of Healthia’s Clinical Leadership Program. She teaches in the recent graduate, Clinical Leadership  and Early Career Mentoring Program across multiple allied health disciplines. As a dual accredited physiotherapist and exercise physiology Alice is passionate about working in a cohesive multidisciplinary team.  

Dr John Radovanovic, Orthopaedic Surgeon, Align Orthopaedics + Rehab
Dr John Radovanovic is a Queensland trained Orthopaedic Surgeon. He obtained his medical degree at the University of NSW in 1999.

Following early orthopaedic exposure with trauma he completed his training on the Queensland Program. He was admitted as a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in 2007.

In 2008 Dr Radovanovic undertook further specialist training in the United Kingdom. During this time he specialised in lower limb surgery, including techniques in knee arthroscopy, hip arthroscopy and joint replacement surgery.

On return to Australia in 2009, he continued to further his experience in trauma and joint replacement at Westmead Hospital. Later that year he started work as a consultant surgeon at the Mater Hospital in Brisbane, becoming Director of Orthopaedics in 2014 which continues to this day.

He is also involved in Orthopaedic registrar teaching and was the Chair of Training for the AOA for Queensland for the last 2 years.
