Exercise in the Management of MAFLD

This online activity will showcase the key recommendations and clinical implications reported in the recently published ESSA Position Statement on Metabolic-Associated Fatty Liver Disease and will examine the key considerations for implementation of the guidelines.

Exercise in the Management of Metabolic-Associated Fatty Liver Disease (MAFLD) in Adults

A Position Statement from Exercise and Sport Science Australia
Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD, formerly known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease/NAFLD) affects up to one third of Australians (recent estimate are as high as 39%!) and is becoming more prevalent with the global escalation of obesity-related chronic disease. In addition to increasing risk of end-stage liver disease and liver cancer, MAFLD plays a central role in the development and worsening of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and extrahepatic cancers. Given the lack of approved pharmaceutical agents, lifestyle therapy is the cornerstone of management for all people with MAFLD. It is now established that exercise is an effective therapy for reducing liver fat, even in the absence of weight loss.

Exercise professionals play a central role in the multidisciplinary integrated approach to MAFLD management. This online activity will showcase the key recommendations and clinical implications reported in the recently published ESSA Position Statement. In addition to highlighting principals of prescription (and the underlying evidence), the PD will examine the key considerations for implementation of the guidelines.

Prescriptive targets, outcome testing and evaluation, and special considerations will be discussed for practitioners working in clinical practice. Additionally, insights from people living with MAFLD will be explored giving a unique insight into challenges and opportunities for exercise care in people with MAFLD.

This is a recording of an ESSA webinar presented on 8 March 2024.
